Aquarium shrimps are real little workers on the seabed, and they need a suitable, balanced diet to thrive. Omnivores and detritivores to begin with, they eat a wide variety of foods, from algae granules specially formulated for them. So how do you provide them with a varied diet to ensure their well-being and avoid water pollution? Here's how!

How often and how should aquatic shrimp be fed?

As a young department manager in a pet shop, I've often had occasion to observe that the golden rule when it comes to feeding prawns is moderation. That's right, We recommend feeding them 1 to 3 times a week.

Here are a few tips on how to feed your little protégés without excess:

  • Use a feeding dish to prevent food scattering.
  • Make sure the prawns eat all the food in less than two hours.
  • Remove leftovers quickly to avoid polluting the water.

For a good moult and vibrant coloursIt's vital to offer them a varied diet. Alternating between enriched granules, poached vegetables, dried leaves and supplements such as spirulina is ideal for avoiding deficiencies.

What vegetables can you feed the prawns?

Vegetables are an excellent source of nutrients for your prawns. Here's a list of various choices:

  • Carrots : rich in beta-carotene, improve the colour of prawns.
  • Courgettes and cucumbers : easy to poach and nutritious.
  • Peas : skinned, they are very popular.
  • Spinach and salad : rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Tomatoes : as long as the seeds are removed to avoid digestive problems.

For proper preparation, these vegetables should be poached or boiled before being offered to the prawns. On the other hand, avoid soft fruit such as strawberries or ripe bananas, as they decompose quickly and pollute the water.

What do prawns like to eat?

Prawns are not difficultBut some foods attract them more than others. Here is a selection of their favourites:

  • Specially formulated granules: rich in essential nutrients.
  • Firm-fleshed fruit : melon or coconut (remove after 2 hours).
  • Spirulina and moringa : perfect for healthy prawns.
  • Dead leaves : such as oak, moringa or catappa.

As a big animal lover, here's a little anecdote: a customer told me that his prawns were crazy about spirulina-based prawn lollies. Fun and nutritious!

It is also possible to offer small quantities of meat, such as ham or raw fish. However, these foods should be removed quickly after about 20 minutes to avoid polluting the water.

All about dried leaves for aquarium shrimps

Dried leaves are an excellent source of food and do not pollute the water. I've found that oak, mulberry, bramble, nettle and moringa leaves are particularly well tolerated.

Other beneficial dried leaves include :

  • Catappa, walnut, hazel and alder leaves.
  • Chestnut, dandelion, apple and pear leaves.
  • Cherry, raspberry, guava and banana leaves.

These leaves can be left in the aquarium without any risk of pollution. They allow the shrimp to feed naturally and facilitate moulting.

How often should you feed the prawns?

As I often tell my customers, the frequency of feeding should take into account the amount of natural food available in the tank. As a general rule, feed your shrimp 1 to 3 times a week.

For a good ratio, here is a suggestive table of feeding frequencies:

Type of feedingFrequency
Granules1-3 times a week
Dried leavesContinuous
Poached vegetables1-2 times a week
Small quantities of meatOnce a month

It is important to ensure that all the food is consumed in less than two hours. This avoids unnecessary leftovers and pollution of the bin.

Why put shrimp in an aquarium? ? As well as their decorative role, they are the aquarium's indispensable housekeepers. They help to clean up algae and eat food scraps, ensuring the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.
